The Cubs low-A affiliate in Eugene has just completed an improbable run to win the NWL Championship. After finishing with the worst record in the NWL at 31-45 in the regular season, they barely squeaked into the playoffs after finishing second in their division but the first place team already having a spot since they won the first half. (Minor leagues takes winner of first and second half of each division to playoffs) Since then the Emeralds won 4 straight to take a 2-0 in the Championship series when they were down 2-1 in the ninth. After two singles, the opposing Spokane Indians pitcher hit a batter to load the bases.

He then walked in the tying run, and polished it off with a walk-off balk by dropping the ball on the mound. Unreal stuff.

The Emeralds swept the NWL playoffs, which was their first sweep all year. On top of that, the Ems bullpen allowed NO runs in the playoffs and pitched more inning than their starters. Just shows there’s nothing but winning going on up and down the Cubs organization.
