Keeping Up on the Machado Rumors

Reports came out yesterday that the Oriole’s already had a deal in place with a team for Manny Machado and were waiting for the end of the all-star break to make it official. The O’s have been looking to move Machado for some time now  as they sitting what has to be some kind of record 39.5 games out of first place at the all-star break.

Originally, it was rumored that the Phillies were on the other end of this handshake deal, as the Phillies and Brewers were said to be the finalists in the Machado sweepstakes. Now, however, reports are coming out that put the Dodgers as the leading contenders, but nothing is set in stone yet. All that is known is that a deal is 99% done with the Orioles starting to look through medicals.

The Phillies have just released via MLB.com’s Jon Morosi that top pitching prospect Adonis Medina. Only 21, he is the second best prospect in the Phil’s organization and throws a nice fastball that can get up to 95-96 with a change-up and a slider that need work. He’s 8-3 in high A ball this year with 75 Ks and 26 BBs, but an ERA over 4 due to an inability to keep the ball in the ballpark.

This would be a high risk move from the Phillies as they would surely add other pieces around him and have to sell a large part of the farm for a three month rental. However, the Phillies have talked about signing Machado in the offseason, and have a spot at shortstop to accommodate him, Machado has said he will only sign with a team where he can play shortstop. Current Phils’ SS Scott Kingery has been unimpressive this year so Machado would be a huge boost and a great fit for the first place Phils.

The Phils could throw in Kingery as he is still young and was once a top prospect, or could add a number of top prospects from their farm which was named the fifth best at the start of the year. The Dodgers’ sit at 10th on that list, with breakout pitcher Walker Buehler at the top of the list, but I’d guess they would not want to deal him leaving them to forming a package around OF Alex Verdugo who has hit 9 hits and 4 doubles in 9 games played in the bigs this year. If not Verdugo then catcher Keibert Ruiz or another top 100 OF Yusniel Diaz will probably be in the deal. I would not be surprised to see two of these guys either, because the Phills have announced they are not afraid to spend large on Machado, but could also wait until the offseason.

Either way, I predict that Machado will be dealt Wednesday. Many reports have come out saying they want the deal done before the second half, and even Machado has said he wants a deal done sooner rather than later. Stay tuned and I’ll keep you posted.
